Product Review: HP ENVY Photo 6230 Printer

I received this product as part of a review program in return for an unbiased review.

HP ENVY Photo 6230

The HP ENVY Photo 6230 may look unassuming and lacks any stand-out features – but don’t let this fool you, this printer is the evolution of years of HP experience coming together. You won’t find any gimmicks here, the 6230 is a solid, reliable and well-made home office printer.

Installing the printer is quick and easy. The recommended setup is by smartphone, simply scanning the QR code to start the installation. It takes less than 5 minutes and can also be done by PC. The box contains setup cartridges and sample photo paper to get you started, but these won’t last long.

Ink Cartridges

As part of the setup you have the option to subscribe to HP Instant Ink. This clever system monitors your ink levels and sends you new cartridges before you run out. There are various subscription levels depending on how much ink you use. The HP ENVY Photo 6230 uses 2 cartridges, a black and a tri-colour, rather than the more typical individual colours. This unfortunately means that you will be throwing away cartridges that still contain good ink just because one colour has run out.

Unlike cheaper home printers, the 6230 has an enclosed paper tray, with separate photo paper tray, meaning you don’t have to adjust the paper tray every time you switch media. Printing speed is good, and the quality is great. The wireless connection has worked without fail during my tests and printing is effortless from PC, tablet or mobile.

Example Prints

The HP ENVY Photo 6230 is a great home/office hybrid – perfectly suited to printing photos and documents. It’s a little larger than I expected, but it does have a full A4 scanner and enclosed paper tray. I think the second paper tray for photos is a great touch, but I was disappointed to see a combined colour cartridge – I thought these had been phased out by manufacturers. The wireless printing has been rock-solid from mobile and PC and the print quality is great as you’d expect from HP. If you are looking for a good all-round printer I can highly recommend the ENVY Photo 6230.
